Like flies on a corpse is the third level of Arrival, the only chapter of the Chimera Plank in Marathon Rubicon.

Synopsis

A filler level without much of a story. Your goal here is to retrieve a key card and return to Durandal to access a restricted part of the ship. Throughout the level you'll find a lot of info regarding the new weapons as well as the history behind them to keep you up to date while you were stasis. There's an entire outside area to explore but it serves no purpose. This level also introduces tons of the things to the scenario, new and old. The newly upgraded Hulk, now equipped with Cyborg-esque grenades it will hurl at you. The S'pht'Kr also make their return as well as the VacBob to aid you. You will also be able to pick up the new, but completely the same, MA-75B Assault Rifle. And if it wasn't obvious before, Tycho is formerly introduced in this level.

Walkthrough

When you teleport in, go right of the teleporter to the two doors facing each other. Take the one on the left and go inside to grab the assault rifle. Head back out the way you came and go through the other door. A huge standoff between UESC troops and the pfhor will be going on. Immediately rush into the middle of the fight to spawn in more Bobs to assist you. Run back to a safe distance and pick off all of the pfhor. Once the room is clear go to the opposite side of the room with the huge, sealed off blast door. To the right of it you'll see an elevator, take it up. Take the first door to the right and walk on the catwalk until you're able to turn left. There is a three-way hallway here. Straight leads you to an elevator which will take you outside. The left will take you to two rooms, one with a Hunter inside and an oxygen canister, and the other with an assault rifle and a plethora of ammo. Finally, the hallway to the right also contains two rooms. One with the key card you need to complete the level, and the other with a Tycho terminal as well as a save terminal.

Retrace your steps to the beginning of the level, read the terminal, and teleport out.

Secrets

  • Head down under the Chimera wreckage outside and then swim alongside it until you surface. This room contains a terminal, ammo, and a 2x health canister. The easiest way to get there is to drop down from the elevator and look right where you'll see a crevice in the rock which is where you need to go.
  • In the same area, but this time looking to the left from the elevator, swim far enough till you see a path you can go up. Follow the path, jumping from rock to rock until you reach a room at the end. Inside is a shotgun and ammo.

Trivia

  • This level was originally an exploration level (wander around, read the terminals, leave). But this left the players confused and without any goal. So the key card was put in.
