Synopsis

You have just arrived onboard the hangar of the UESC Marathon, which is currently under attack by an unknown alien force. Being the very first level of the Marathon Universe, resistance is fairly low. It would be a good idea to practice using your fists while you have this opportunity.

Walkthrough

You begin facing a terminal at the end of a hallway, splitting into two directions. There are some Fighters stationed down both paths, and will be the first set of enemies you'll need to take out. Once they've been dealt with, check out the terminal for some information as to what exactly is going on. You'll be told that you need to work your way through the hangar area to reach a jump point that will take you to the next level.

Head right and enter the first room you come across on the left. There is another room connected to this one that leads downstairs to some more fighters and some ammo. Take care of all this and return to the hallway. You'll pass another room on the right that overlooks the hangar, and then another with two locked doors (one of which is stuck partially open). You'll then arrive in a large room with two windows on the left (if you look closely outside, you'll see the enemies ship). At the end of this room are a set of stairs leading up to another room with some fighters and ammo. The switch along the staircase will raise the pillar next to the save terminal in the room, allowing you access to the next area (though its just as easy to run across to the other side).

You'll now find yourself in a maze, with a couple elevators connecting to other rooms. Navigating it shouldn't be too difficult so long as you have your map. Some of the paths lead to ammo caches, while others lead to terminals protected by compilers. There is also another save terminal and a 1x regenerator You'll eventually come to a part in the maze where the path drops down into a larger room below. This room is populated by several fighters, so make sure you're prepared to take them out. Once you've done that, activate the switch at the far end of the room. This will open up the door on the opposite side.

Heading through, you'll have a couple more fighters to deal with before reaching your objective (the switch on your way will open up the partially opened door for you to return to the rest of the level). Log on to the terminal, get some more information on the situation, and transport to the next level.

Secrets

  • Near the end of the level with the Pfhor fighter pit, there is a hidden door filled with an ammo cache. To get there, approach the room from the right side via the tunnels and before falling down, take an immediate left and land on top of the ledge. Tab the wall in front of you and it will open up.

Notes

  • The music track used on this level is called Landing.
  • Due to Marathon's ties to Pathways into Darkness, the M1A1 team decided that an appropriate beginning for Arrival would be to have the player-character start off on the first floor of PiD's temple before bursting out into the corridors of the Marathon. This addition has been removed in the most recent version of Aleph One.
